Common Building Inspection Violations

In an effort to help cut down the likelihood of failed inspections, and the associated re-inspections and re-inspection fees, we are providing you with a list of often-found building code violations.

Common violations found on ROUGH building inspections:

  1. Penetrations through the top and bottom plate.
  2. Proper stud guards shall be installed where drywall screws and nails can penetrate PVC, conduit, water piping and the like.
  3. The proper connectors for uplift on rafters.
  4. The proper location of smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors.
  5. Installation of the Ufer ground for new single family homes.
  6. The installation of a one inch conduit run from the basement to the attic (local amendment).
  7. The installation of the electrical box for future use of an active Radon system (State of Illinois Requirement).
  8. Proper sealing of electrical boxes on the exterior walls for energy code compliance.
  9. Properly sized vent and drain plumbing lines.
  10. Over boring of studs in exterior and interior walls. 

 

Common violations found on FINAL building inspections:

  1. Proper installation of handrails.
  2. Proper installation of guard rails.
  3. Smoke detectors installed in proper location and operational in series.
  4. Carbon monoxide detectors installed in proper location.
  5. The water and gas piping shall be bonded at the water heater.
  6. The electrical disconnect for the dishwasher shall be located in a visible location.
  7. The Building Compliance Sticker shall be filled out properly and located in the electrical panel. 
  8. The electrical panel shall have all circuits properly labeled.
  9. The results of a door blower test shall be provided to the Village prior to a final inspection being conducted. 
  10. Inoperable GFCI receptacle.
  11. The overcurrent protection for the A/C unit must not exceed the name plate rating.
  12. The service door from the garage into the house must have a closer.
  13. All penetrations to the exterior must be sealed.
  14. The attic scuttle hole must have a gasket.
  15. Beam pockets in the basement must be grouted.
  16. Bolts in the basement or elsewhere must be tight to the column.
  17. Project must be 100% complete prior to the inspection taking place.  It should be ready for the homeowner to occupy.    
  18. A vacuum breaker is required on handheld showers.
  19. The water temperature must be a minimum of 120 degrees at the kitchen sink and shall not exceed 115 degrees at tubs and showers.
  20. The dishwasher cannot discharge into the garbage disposal.
  21. The garbage disposal must be trapped separately from all other compartments.
  22. A proper sized expansion tank is required on all closed water systems.
  23. The ejector pit shall be properly sealed with proper ball and check valve.
