Is a Permit Required?

Whether you are planning a do-it-yourself home improvement project or are hiring a professional contractor, a quick call to the Building Department is a good idea before starting work to see if a building permit is required.

Permits are required for most building projects in order to ensure that they are built in accordance with the Village of Long Grove's currently adopted building codes and zoning codes, amendments to the code, and all ordinances pertaining to residential and commercial construction. Aside from the review of structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing plans, the permit approval process may also include a review for Energy Conservation Code compliance, zoning compliance or engineering review for Village of Long Grove Stormwater Ordinance compliance. Plan examination for fire prevention and life-safety standards may also be required; applicants should consult their respective fire department directly for requirements. Certain projects also require a Lake County permit. (You may refer to the submittal requirement checklist on each permit application for this information.) Professional inspections conducted by qualified inspectors throughout the various stages of construction help to make certain that construction is to-code, work sites are safe, workmanship is at an industry standard, and projects are built according to the approved specifications.

Although a contractor may apply for a building permit on behalf of a homeowner, ultimately it is the property owner's responsibility to make certain that a Village building permit is secured before any work commences on his or her own property.
