Robert Parker Coffin Road Bridge Construction Updates

Robert Parker Coffin Road Bridge Is Closed for Final Repair

The bridge will be temporarily closed for repairs with renovations extending into summer. All work is weather dependent. This project could experience delays if there are heavy rains, which have the potential to cause water levels in the creek to rise below the bridge. The contractor hired to make the repairs will be monitoring water levels during the bridge’s closure.

Project Updates:

September 24, 2020:

Please click here to view the Construction Notice for the bridge cover repairs, scheduled for September 28-29. The bridge will be closed from 7:00AM - 3:00PM each day, with the temporary re-opening on Monday late afternoon and evening.

August 19, 2020

The bridge was damaged by a school bus shortly after re-opening. A structural investigation was completed for the bridge truss structure, and the findings were: no damages to the truss structure from the bus and the bridge can remain open. The damage was limited to several boards and trim above the bridge entrances that are in the process of being replaced. The Village is in the process of receiving quotes for the timber cover repairs. The Village is pursuing the bus company insurance to cover all Village costs resulting from this incident, including repairs and engineering evaluations.

The bridge is officially re-opened!

August 12, 2020

The construction work is anticipated to be completed by August 13, 2020, and the bridge re-opened on August 14, 2020.

July 31, 2020

The contractor began working on the bridge’s siding and shingle installation. Planned completion is by mid-August, weather permitting.

July 17, 2020

The contractor is proceeding with the roof decking installation this week. The exterior wooden members will also be delivered to the site this week for installation. The exterior wooden pieces were cut and stained offsite, in efforts to expedite the process.
The cover is scheduled to be substantially complete by August 7, with some of the finishing to be complete by August 14.

July 7, 2020

The contractor began erecting the steel frame for the bridge cover this morning and the wooden cover will be added in the coming weeks.

June 23, 2020

The contractor is completing the preparation work for concrete approaches for the bridge (see attached pictures). The concrete will be the base for bricks that are currently being stored offsite. The bricks will be replaced; however, that work will not occur until the end of the overall project, i.e. after the timber cover is installed. The bricks will be replaced towards the end of the project to help protect against unnecessary wear and tear.

June 8, 2020

This week, the contractor completed the painting of the bridge, removal of the steel sheet piles (that were used to control the water during construction), and began filling behind the concrete abutments.

The contractor was not able to return the bridge to its location crossing the creek. The bridge relocation is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9. Next week, the anticipated work includes, cleanup of the stream bed under the bridge, relocation of the bridge to the creek crossing, construction of the timber cover foundations, completion of filling behind the concrete abutments.

May 29,2020

In discussions today with the contractor, next week, they are going to be backfilling the abutments, removing the steel sheeting, and are scheduled to move the bridge back into place late in the week (The completed abutments, as seen in the photos below, are the foundations that support the bridge. The limestone abutments were replaced with concrete). Also, the painting of the bridge started yesterday with the preparatory work; they are going to continue painting this weekend.

May 25, 2020

The contractor completed the first concrete pour for the west abutment yesterday. They have begun forming the southern wingwall (see photo below). The contractor plans to continue the construction of the west abutment next week. The Village Engineer is waiting on an updated schedule for the painting of the bridge and schedule to move it to the new abutments.

May 13, 2020

The contractor completed the installation of the concrete abutment and wingwalls on the east side of the bridge yesterday. They are now moving to the west side, where they will install the structural steel and concrete forms for the remainder of the week. Concrete is scheduled to be installed on the west side of the bridge next week.

Simultaneous with the concrete abutment work, crews are working on the steel repairs to the bridge. Weather permitting, the bridge could be painted as soon as next week.

May 6, 2020

The contractor has completed the construction of the concrete footings on both sides of the bridge and started forming for the concrete abutment on the east side. The contractor plans to continue forming on the west side and install the concrete either late this week or early next week. Simultaneously, another crew continues the steel repairs to the bridge.

May 1, 2020

The contractor was able to install the concrete foundations on the east side of the bridge this week. The rains in the middle of the week suspended all work. The contractor plans to monitor the water level in the creek over the next few days, dewater their work area, and resume construction on Monday, May 4.

April 24, 2020

The contractor completed the installation of the underground steel piles on both sides of the bridge this week, which allowed them to remove the large crane from the site. The contractor began preparations to install the concrete footings on both sides of the bridge today. The concrete footings are scheduled to be complete next week.

April 21, 2020

The contractor finished the installation of the underground steel piles on the east side of the bridge today. They will reconfigure their equipment and begin the installation of the underground steel piles on the west side of the bridge tomorrow.

April 13, 2020

The contractor began installing the underground steel piles that will support the new bridge and abutments. The installation of the steel piles is scheduled to continue this week.

April 3, 2020

The bridge was moved last Friday, March 27, and is currently being temporarily stored at the Long Grove Community Church property. The bridge was moved offsite to facilitate the abutment replacement project. This week began with the removal of the existing limestone block abutments. Some blocks were able to be salvaged and placed at the Historic Society Building at the northeast corner of the park, adjacent to Cigars and More. Other blocks that deteriorated/broke during the removal process may be reused as backfill of the new abutments. Another critical item completed this week was the installation of the steel cofferdams, which were installed to keep the work area dry. Currently, earth excavation is ongoing for the new bridge abutments.
